But I thought Yahoo was a search engine? Nope, Yahoo is a directory, or subject catalog. A search engine looks through the text of Web pages, while a directory looks through its own listings of Web sites -- and lets you browse the directory by subject. Power Reporting: Search tools: Directories

AnyWho
Free lookup site by AT&T (does not use billing records of it's customers) for locating a person or business using White Pages, or for finding a business by type, using Yellow pages. All residential listings were obtained from public phone directories and are updated every 3 months, while business White and Yellow Page listings were obtained from InfoSpace and are updated monthly.

Argali White & Yellow
Argali White & Yellow searches multiple telephone (and related) directories at once. Many different search types are supported: people, business, toll-free, reverse search (by phone or address), search for area and zip codes. Argali also searches for maps, email addresses and weather conditions and forecast. Search results can be sorted by name, address, street, city, state, zip code or phone number and can also be saved on disk in various formats (plain text, csv/excel, or html). The program automatically remembers your last twenty searches. Aggregates info. from more than 25 sources/sites (Yahoo, InfoSpace and AnyWho).

Argus Clearinghouse
A selective guide to the best research sites on the Web, selected by librarians at the Clearinghouse. Not so broad, but the listings are evaluated and ranked.

Black Book
Some very interesting search choices offered at this investigation resource site. Of primary interest would be the "registering a sex offender center" link. Most of the other links are for books and services that can be purchased by investigation associations, but the site does have some other interesting resources, such as a P.I. (private investigator) licensing directory that can be searched.

Britannica
Now includes the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica, all 32 volumes, but no longer free. You can sign up for 72 hours of free access, but then have to cancel or you'll be subscribed. Also more than 70 newspapers and a directory of Web links, evaluated by Britannica editors.

CJR's TV Station Finder
A directory of TV station affiliations categorized by network and by the state in which the stations are located. This link can be found by scrolling down to the Media Finder section.

Direct Search
Gary Price's collection of stuff you won't find in search engines.

Excite
Another search engine that is morphing into a directory into a portal. Eveyone wants to be Yahoo, but Excite's search engine still is useful.

Finding God in Cyberspace
A theology professor's guide to resources for religion research online, including people, books, academic disciplines, various religions, and "interaction between religion and digital culture."

Galaxy
An early Web directory.

GO Network
A search engine (Infoseek) that wants to be a Yahoo clone, with a Web directory and links to many useful services. Owned by Infoseek Corp. and incorporates the old Infoseek directory.

Hotsheet
Comprehensive site for just about every interest.

InfoMine
Scholarly Internet resources, by category.

Librarians' Index to the Internet
A rich topical directory of Web sites evaluated and annotated by librarians. Search by keyword. From California State Library.

Lycos
With Go and Excite, one of the trio moving from search engine to portal. Popular Web sites, by category. The Lycos 50, which lists the most popular searches, is amusing. Note that nearly everyone still searches for only one term, getting far more than they wanted.

Martindale's Reference Desk
Numerous links for topics of science, health and the environment, to name a few. Included more specialized categories such as scuba diving and cooking. Constantly updated. By Jim Martindale.

Media Finder
Comprehensive database of print media in the US and Canada.

Moveo.com
Create your own Yahoo, a customized portal.

Price's List of Lists
If there's a list on the Web, Gary Price has found it.

Radio Locator
Comprehensive radio station search engine with links to over 10,000 radio station web pages and over 2500 audio streams from radio stations in the U.S. and around the world

Reference Sources on Yahoo
Directs you to helpful sites for your writing or to find people or basic facts.

Scout Report Signpost
Culled from the Scout Report newsletters, Signpost is a searchable directory of 8,000 of the best Web sites, in many topics. One of the sites you would take on your desert island trip.

Sibelius Academy Music Resources
Links to sites for music of all kinds, from pop/rock to Finnish to computer tunes, plus music magazines, music schools, instruments, and libraries. You can't search it, but if you have a decent idea of what you're looking for, you'll get a wealth of information.

Snap
A Yahoo competitor with its own directory of the Web.

The Phrase Finder
A database of the meanings and origins of thousands of English phrases and sayings. Has a bulletin board with 30,000 entries to discuss phrases origins and meanings.

The World Wide Web Virtual Library
The original Web library, maintained by volunteers in subject areas. Some areas are far deeper than others.

Webcrawler
Web pages submitted and reviewed, by category. Also has a search engine.

World Directory of Think Tanks
Japan's National Institute for Research Advancement has a massive list of major think tanks worldwide -- 320 from 77 regions. This site provides contact information along with short descriptions of what the think tank's focus is, lists of staff and publications, and brief background information.

Yahoo
The best one-stop Web directory. Remember that you're not seaching the Web. Nor are you searching the text of Web pages. You are seaching Yahoo's own directory of Web sites, which is by no means complete. But Yahoo is a great place to start when you remember the name of an organization, but not its address, or when you want general information on a popular subject that is likely to be in Yahoo's heirarchy of the Web.

Yahoo What's New
A good way to keep a finger on the pulse of the Web culture. Lists more than 1,000 new sites each daily. Either view the entire list, or by category.
