Power Reporting: Reference shelf: Calculators

Bankrate
News, features, advice and calculators on personal finance.

Calculate Anything
More than 5,000 calculators on every subject: weights, distances, offbeat stuff.

Calculate Your Mortgage Payment
A simple mortgage calculator -- what's the monthly payment going to be?

College cost calculators
Several calculators for the college bound. From FinAid.org.

Columbia Journalism Review Inflation Calculator
Use the form to convert dollars from a past year into current dollars, adjusted for inflation. Based on the US Consumer Price Index.

Cost of Living Calculator
Allows you to adjust dollar figures for inflation in the US, for any years from 1913 forward. Choose "all items" and then either a region or "U.S. city average." Note that you can adjust either from an older year to a newer year, or vice versa. From George Landau's NewsEngine. Uses the U.S. Consumer Price Index.

Cost-of-living Comparison
Lets you compare the cost of living in two U.S. or international cities. How much do you need to make in Manhattan to match your salary in Boise?

Date and Time Gateway
International time readings.

Electoral College calculator
A free calculator for the U.S. presidential election, in Microsoft Excel format. Plug in the votes or percentages in each state, and it calculates the electoral winner, the number of states won, and comparisons with 1996. From Power Reporting.

Expedia Currency Converter
Convert dollars to yen, pounds to guilders, etc.

Home...auto...credit calculators
A variety of consumer credit calculators, from financenter.com.

How far is it
Calculate the distance between any two places in the world. Then see maps.

International Salary Calculator
Compares salaries among U.S. and international cities. Of course, neither of these calculators considers tax variations.

Landings databases
Among the treasure trove at Landings is a calculator of the distance between airports.

Links to time and calendar services
Links to services that give time in all time zones, as well as perpetual calendars. Also discussions of leap seconds and other ephemera.

Mapquest Driving Directions
Mapquest will show you the way -- approximately -- between any two North American cities -- distance, maps, directions.

Official U.S. Time
Gives the official time for U.S. time zones. From the atomic clocks of the National Institute of Standards and the U.S. Naval Observatory. The agencies claim that Web users can expect readings that are accurate to much better than one second.

Percent Change Calculator
From George Landau, who may not be kidding. As he says, "The fact that you need this tool will be our little secret."

Perpetual Calendar
Just plug in the year for a calendar of that year.

Research It
A one-stop shop for dictionaries, translators, other Web tools.

Systran
Provides online translation among European languages. But you certainly wouldn't want to negotiate a contract based on its translation. I sent "assistant metro editor at the Chicago Sun-Times" through from English to French, and then sent the result back from French to English, and it became, "auxiliary editor of subway during Sun-Times of Chicago." And "broadcast intern" became "intern of emission." But it is free.

Time around the World
With maps. View the entire globe in one map with time zones. Or, at the bottom of the page, look up a country or display a regional map of time zones. Not intended to provide atomic-clock accuracy, but to show the relative time by zone. Compiled by Alexander Krivenyshev, oceanographer.

What Time Is It?
The U.S. Naval Observatory master clock.

Word Counter
Analyze speeches, corporate documents or a news article. This tool counts the frequency of words in a document.

World Currency Converter
Conversions based on today's exchange rates.

World Time Zone Map
Map of the world with time zones.
